Early Years Education’ at Eton End is covered in the Nursery and Reception classes. In the Nursery, children can enter our “Fledglings” class the term in which they become three years of age. The “Skylarks” class accommodates children aged three to four years old. Our four to five year olds make the transition to the Pre-Prep Department in their Reception year.

We recognise that in order for children to become successful learners they need to feel happy, safe and secure in their everyday learning world. Emphasis is placed on providing a positive environment within which we enable the children to become active and competent learners. Communication between school and home is open and consistent.

We provide a curriculum that is delivered in a carefully planned, child-centred environment, both indoors and outdoors. We facilitate a range of stimulating adult-led and child-initiated activities which reflect the individual needs of children and allow them to work and play in different collaborative situations.
The curriculum is based on, but not limited by, the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidelines. It encompasses the seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

A structured framework for assessing children’s learning and development enables us to track each child’s progress and to plan for differentiated activities to meet individual needs across the curriculum. Throughout the school year we build a profile of each child using observation notes, samples of work and photographs which reflect the child’s achievements and progress.  These are shared with the child, its parents and the staff during transition from Nursery to Reception and Reception to Year One.

In order to nurture and stimulate a child’s innate curiosity and interest, the curriculum is enhanced by a range of rich learning experiences and activities. Themes include:

  • Cultural festivities, such as Chinese New Year and Diwali
  • Educational visits e.g. Bekonscot Model Village, Tate Britain, The National Gallery and Eton College Natural History Museum
  • An artist focus each term e.g. Vincent Van Gogh and Howard Hodgkin
  • A specific author focus e.g. David McKee, Jill Murphy and Nick Sharratt
  • Visiting drama and science groups
  • Participation in whole school days, e.g. World Book Day, Red Nose Day, Children in Need Day
  • Performances and Assemblies

Specialist teachers enhance our Early Years’ provision and lessons incorporated into the curriculum include:

  • Music
  • Gym, Football, Games and Athletics
  • Dance
  • French and Spanish
  • R.E.
